"Bosnian War"

“A thing is not necessarily true because a man dies for it.”~Oscar Wilde

Drawn into this image by the effectiveness of the splatter effect coming through the concrete. I soon found out that this image though unfamiliar to me is a international calling card, for the Bosnian War that decimated the early 90’s.

“A Sarajevo Rose is the mark of a mortar shell that has been filled in with red resin, and they represent a location where one or more people were killed by that particular mortar. The name comes from the fact that the mortar impact resembles a floral arraignment, and Sarajevo is the location of some of the most intense fighting during the Bosnian War. An interesting, but sad, memory.” -supertightstuff.com

first things first, i had to find out were in the world this took place. BOOOM!:

Southern Europe.

NOW THAT “where the hell is Sarajevo at?” OUT OF THE WAY,

the images instantly bring me to khalil jibran….

Your pain is the breaking of the shell that encloses your understanding.
Even as the stone of the fruit must break, that its heart may stand in the sun, so must you know pain.
And could you keep your heart in wonder at the daily miracles of your life, your pain would not seem less wondrous than your joy;
And you would accept the seasons of your heart, even as you have always accepted the seasons that pass over your fields.
And you would watch with serenity through the winters of your grief.

Much of your pain is self-chosen.
It is the bitter potion by which the physician within you heals your sick self.
Therefore trust the physician, and drink his remedy in silence and tranquillity:
For his hand, though heavy and hard, is guided by the tender hand of the Unseen,
And the cup he brings, though it burn your lips, has been fashioned of the clay which the Potter has moistened with His own sacred tears.

On a side note:

“There is a famous photograph taken by Annie Liebovitz during the war.  It shows a bicycle collapsed on pavement, a crescent of blood smeared against the pale ground like a stroke of Chinese calligraphy.  Liebovitz flew into Sarajevo in 1993, a year into the siege.   On the drive back from her meeting with the newly crowned Miss Besieged Sarajevo, a mortar tumbled down ahead of the car. “It hit a teenage boy on a bike,” she wrote, “and ripped a big hole in his back. We put him in the car and rushed him to the hospital, but he died on the way.”

I saw this image before when i was in high school. this was the only reference i ever had for the Bosnian War, i almost feel its all the imagery i need. But its interesting to see how what we know comes full circle with what we do not know when actively searching for knowledge.

I guess thats enough contemporary art history for one day….

    New from Banksy: Zorro

Banksy2

Word is out that Banksy has graced the world with his latest street piece, which actually isn’t on the street but on a tower in Westbourne Park, London. This time, Banksy has replicated a classic Zorro image.

“It hasn’t been confirmed as a Banksy yet by his own website or anything,” writes RJ of Vandalog, “but street art authorities are calling a Banksy, the style fits and there is a similar sketch in his show at The Bristol Museum, so I think it’s a safe bet.

“Zorro is an interesting subject for Banksy to paint, as NoLionsInEngland has noted on WallKandy: ‘Zorro defended peasants from the tyrannical authority of officials and aristocrats, as does Banksy; Zorro was the alter-ego of a knight or some kind of aristocrat, and certain newspapers seem convinced that Banksy is/was a mild-mannered publicschool poshie.’”

The thing i been feindin on Bansky is how he activates the object and the surrounding its in. mad props to my dupe.
